Selected news from this issue:
Tribute to Ishinomori Shoutarou
Tucked in the back of this issue is a tribute to the late great mangaka Ishinomori Shoutarou, best known for his creation of the science fiction manga and anime CYBORG 009, but also known for series such as HIMITSUSENTAI GORANGER, GANBARE ROBOKON, JINZOUNINGEN KIKAIDA, and KAMEN RIDER BLACK, all hits from the 1960s, through his heyday in the 70s, on into the 80s. Eight current SHONEN SUNDAY authors write their own words on the influence Ishinomori had on their lives and careers, and even someone unfamiliar with Ishinomori would quickly realize just what kind of huge impact he had. For example, Takahashi Rumiko writes, "In grade school, the first manga comics I ever bought with my own money were CYBORG 009." Shiina Takashi (who has done a spoof on 009 in GHOST SWEEPER MIKAMI) writes, "There probably isn't a boy in Japan who hasn't admired an Ishinomori TV hero." Muraeda Kenichi lists off a whole bunch of titles and notes that it was all thanks to those that he was able to "play all sorts of games [based on those works] and build up my stamina."Adachi Mitsuru credits Ishinomori with having started him down the mangaka path. Aoyama Goushou even notes that, as a child, "I was completely taken up with KAMEN RIDER and practically overate Rider Snacks in order to collect the cards."
Ishinomori Shoutarou's impact on the manga and anime world—not only on the audiences, but on the future generations of mangaka—was thus a giant one, especially during the industry's youth. Even those who might not have followed his work directly would see it reflected in other people's works (Mentions of KAMEN RIDER appeared in such places as DORAEMON), and in the success of the whole "battle team" concept, whose echoes American readers will recognize in not only BATTLE OF THE PLANETS, but POWER RANGERS as well.
His style, even in his later years, reflected his very early start in the 1950s. His drawing style has the fluid feel of the more cartoon-like early manga era, resembling Tezuka Osamu's art to a large degree. Like much of Tezuka's work, Ishinomori's stories also touched heavily on the supernatural and the futuristic (arguably even more so). And also like Tezuka, Ishinomori continued to contribute to the manga and anime industry throughout his life. He passed away at the relatively young age of 60, and even on his deathbed he insisted he would live ten more years to finish his life's work, CYBORG 009. Unfortunately for us, he did not.
